To Know Christ and Make Him Known
What's Happening at St. Christopher? - Notes from the Choir Loft
Favorite Hymns & Summer Choruses

Now that we’ve entered the long, green season of Pentecost, you’ll note that the hymns are
not likely to be as thematic as they are in the first half of the year. Advent, Christmas,
Epiphany, Lent, Easter and Ascension occupy December until Pentecost Sunday, and each
season has its own special hymns.

The season of Pentecost stretches throughout the other half of the year. This gives us some
flexibility regarding the hymn selection that we don’t have the rest of the year. The result is
that if you have a favorite hymn you want to sing, let me know, and we’ll do our best to
work it in between now and Advent I.

Also, we are going to incorporate some less formal music in the services, particularly during
Communion. You may find us singing some of the more reverent choruses that are familiar to
people who have gone to Cursillo and other retreats. Having been organist-choirmaster here
nearly seven years (!), I have been resistant to some suggestions that we incorporate so-
called “praise” music into our services. (In my opinion, “praise” music is exemplified by
“Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven” (410) with full organ and descant. And if you can
throw a trumpet in the mix, you’ve really got
something!)

Nonetheless, there are some lovely, quiet choruses that will work well during Communion,
and we have been asked to sing some of them over the summer months. If you have a
favorite in that genre, let me know. We’ll also be singing some of the great Taize meditative
music from the Taize Community in France, and we’ll also include other simple songs as
well. Words--and if possible without violating copyright laws, music—will be printed as
inserts in the Sunday service leaflets.
