June 2008 Update - Secularizing a Consecrated Building
For many years, we have used our tiny, beloved chapel for worship, vigil, children’s chapel and
prayer. Soon we will have a larger chapel. Acting on the instructions of our bishop, Fr. Tom
Powell presided at a simple service on June 17, 2008 to de-consecrate this sacred space and make
it available for other uses. You might be interested in the prayers that were said.
“We who are gathered here know that this building, which has been consecrated and set apart for
the ministry of God’s holy Word and Sacraments, will no longer be used in this way, but will be
used for other purposes.
To many of you this building has been hallowed by cherished memories, and we know that some
will suffer a sense of loss. We pray that they will be comforted by the knowledge that the
presence of God is not tied to any place or building.
The altar has been removed and protected from desecration.”
After pronouncing a statement of de-consecration, Fr. Tom said another prayer and those present
exchanged the Peace.
“Lord God, in your great goodness, you once accepted to your honor and glory this building, now
secularized: Receive our praise and thanksgiving for the blessings, help, and comfort which you
bestowed upon your people in this place. Continue, we pray, your many mercies in your Church,
that we may be conscious at all times of your unchanging love; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Assist us mercifully, O Lord, in these our prayers, and dispose the way of your servants towards
the attainment of everlasting salvation; that among the swift and varied changes of this world, our
hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.”
June 2008 - Progress continues. The structural framing for the FLC installed. Exterior walls for
FLC going up. The new cross is visible from Loop 820. More demolition. Plumbing for the new
restrooms installed. As of June 30, construction is approximately 35 percent complete.
May 2008 - The foundation and floor slab for the FLC has been poured. Forming of the
foundation for the chapel has started. Structural steel for the FLC and Chapel was delivered and
being erected. A golf cart was rented for service between the parking area and church.
April 2008 - After some delays, utilities for the FLC were plumbed, foundation formed, and
reinforcing steel placed.
March 2008 - The construction office and dumpster were moved on site. Foundation steel for the
Family Life Center was delivered. Piers for the foundation have been poured and forming of the
foundation has started. The structural steel has been delivered to a bonded warehouse. There has
been some weather delays. The Vestry has approved adding the finish-out of the kitchen to
the contract.
February 2008 - Construction is underway. Demolish on the exterior wall at the east end of the
Parish Hall was started, The existing parking pavement where the Family Life Center will be has
been cut out and the debris has been hauled away. Excavation and soil compaction for the
foundation has started. Utilities under the foundation are being installed. The exterior light pole has
been removed. The remaining stone and brick on the east wall has been removed. The playground
equipment has been moved in preparation for the fire lane on the west side of the church.
January 2008 Update - The construction contract has been signed, the pre-construction
conference has been held, and the Notice to Proceed has been given to the contractor.
Construction has started. The contractor has informed us that building activities should begin
during the week of January 28. The plan is that by the end of the week, demolition on the east
end of the Parish Hall will start. Excavation and fill for the foundation of the Family Life Center
should start the week of February 4.
We will have use of the Parish Hall, but will have to enter at the west entrance only. Parking on
pavement will be limited. Please park on the access road and on the grassy area at the east end of
the parking lot on Sunday mornings, unless you need closer entry due to health.
January 2008 - The Construction Manager has submitted a final Guaranteed Maximum Price for
construction of the new Chapel, Family Life Center, and other improvements. The construction
contract is being prepared. Construction should start soon.
December 2007 - There is progress. The building permit has been issued subject to increasing
the fire rating of the south wall of the school, adding a fire lane on the west side of the church,
and providing additional landscaping. The Architect has changed the plans. The Construction
Manager and Subs are reviewing the costs. The Vestry has approved an increase in the Project
Budget based on the proposed changes and preliminary cost estimates. When the revised
construction contract is signed, the Construction Manager will pick up the building permit, and a
pre-construction meeting will be held. Construction should start in mid January.
November 2007 - We are going to have a Family Life Center. When we are going to start
construction is the question. The design is complete, the contractor is ready, we are ready, but—
the City of Fort Worth continues to come up with last minute requirements. The architect is
continuing to work with the City in complying with their wishes. Our thanks to the Construction
Committee’s Marshall Amis for staying on top of the progress. He is continuing to keep the best
interests of the Parish in mind. As I’ve said before, “It’s the people that make the church, not the
building.” Looks like the people are going to have to work a little harder and longer, but we’ll be
there soon.
