"We Are 'Christ Bearers' to Our World"

On July 21, 2003, David Lindsey, our organist and choirmaster, wrote: "Today we celebrate the life of our patron, St. Christopher. Happy St. Christopher Day! Although no longer included in the Roman Catholic Church's list of saints, we of course remember Christopher because his name means "Christ bearer." All Christians are called to be "Christ bearers" to a world hungry for the Gospel and for the loving, compassionate touch of Jesus.

When we visit the sick or care for others in any way, when we give money for missions or for a food bank or when we invite a neighbor to church, we are "Christ bearers."

Until the reform of the Catholic saints' calendar in 1969, Christopher shared July 25 with St. James the Great, apostle. There are several legends about Christopher, including one depicted in statuary in the sanctuary here at the church. Traditionally, Christopher is shown carrying a child across a river. Legend has it that the child Christ was extraordinarily heavy because he was

carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. Christopher became known as a patron saint of travelers.

It has been said that a good Episcopalian is always on the way to  or on the way back from the altar. The altar is the central symbol in most Episcopal churches, and we believe that Christ is uniquely present in the Eucharist. When we receive the Host, we become "Christ bearers" in a powerful, tangible way.

As we go about our lives this week, let's be particularly thankful that God uses ordinary people like you and me to be saints, to be Christophers, "Christ bearers"  to our families, friends, neighbors and people we meet."

St Christopher is located on the North service road of Loop 820 between Trail Lake and Westcreek. St. Christopher is easy to find and easy to get to. We have our roots in the Wedgewood area, but over 60 percent of us live outside of Zip 76133. Over 70 percent of the members are regularly involved in the ministries at St Christopher. Opportunities abound at St. Christopher where you can put your time and talent to work for the Glory of God. You are invited to join!

St. Christopher's Episcopal Church was founded on September 15, 1957, as a mission of the Diocese of Dallas. Of the 15 people who signed the petition to the Rt. Rev. C. Avery Mason, Bishop, seven are still members of the parish. In 1960, the mission became a parish. The present church and church school buildings were completed in July 1961. The Church was consecrated "St Christopher" in 1971. In 1973 the original building was remodeled to become the parish hall, nursery, and chapel, and the office complex was added. In 1984 the church sanctuary was completed with the addition of the narthex, church parlor, and enlargement of the choir loft. The former rectory, known as Christopher House, was used as an activity center for various church groups. The Parish Hall was remodeled in 2005. The aged Christopher House was demolished in 2006. Construction of a new and larger Chapel, a Family Life Center, and other improvements was completed in February, 2009.Our current rector. Rev. William Stanford, has been with us since 2000.
